Ford Makes the Front Trunk a Paid Option

In a move that’s frustrating buyers, Ford has begun charging extra for a front trunk something many drivers assumed was a standard EV perk. As automakers search for new revenue streams, even basic convenience features are no longer guaranteed to come included.

Ford F-150 Lightning

so apparently ford’s charging extra for the front trunk now, which is… kinda funny? like the whole point of that frunk was “look ma, extra space!” and now it’s “look ma, extra bill.” i still like it though. it’s roomy, it smells like rubber and dealership air freshener. if you’ve got like sixty grand ish lying around, go for it, but man, it’s weird how a front trunk became premium. feels like paying for an ashtray.

Tesla Model Y

i drove one once. felt like i was in a minimalist spaceship… but also like i shouldn’t touch anything because i might break it. people hate tesla interiors, but i dunno, it’s clean. the frunk? it’s fine. small but useful. still, elon would 100% make you pay for it if he thought he could. (don’t give him ideas.) around fifty something grand depending on your optimism or whatever.

Chevrolet Bolt EUV

this one’s like the golden retriever of EVs. cheapish, maybe mid thirties, and honestly, i don’t care that it doesn’t have a huge frunk. who’s storing groceries there anyway? i just throw everything in the back and pray it doesn’t roll under the seat. still, the lightning making stuff paid makes you look at the bolt like, wow, at least chevy hasn’t started billing for cupholders… yet.

Rivian R1T

now that frunk. massive. it’s like a picnic basket for tech dudes. i swear it smells faintly like new hiking gear. it’s got soul. and then ford out here trying to sell you a smaller version as an add on. rivian’s pricey though, like seventy, eighty thousand if you blink wrong. but it feels adventurous, like that one ex who always suggested road trips at 2 a.m.

Porsche Taycan

ah yes, porsche. you pay a hundred grand and they still make the frunk feel like a bonus feature. it’s not even big, just cute. i had this weird thought sitting next to one at a red light, it looked too perfect, like the kind of person who irons their socks. i respect it but i also kinda want to spill coffee on it just to see what happens.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

love this car, don’t even care about the tiny frunk or lack thereof. looks retro futuristic. like the 80s imagined the future and somehow got it right. forty something thousand gets you that comfortable cabin smell, like synthetic leather and faint electricity. i’d rather have that vibe than pay extra for a “box under the hood.” sorry ford, no sale.

GMC Hummer EV

okay this thing is just too much. giant screen, giant ego. but i’ll admit, the frunk is impressively big. honestly feels more like a bathtub. it’s the kind of car that makes you feel powerful but a little guilty, you know? (like buying a third monitor.) over a hundred grand though, so not exactly “casual frunk money.”

Volkswagen ID.4

solid little SUV. the frunk is, like, technically there but it’s like trying to store your dreams in a shoebox. price is somewhere in the mid forties, and it drives fine, kinda boring though. i once sat in one at a mall and the salesperson wouldn’t stop saying “German engineering” like it was a spell. i left awkwardly.

Mercedes EQS

luxury spaceship vibes, the kind of car where you whisper even when alone. no frunk worth talking about, though if it did have one, you know mercedes would charge subscription fees for opening it. no joke. 100K and you still gotta pay for a “fragrance feature.” makes ford’s frunk tax seem… almost reasonable? almost.

Nissan Leaf

old reliable. cheapish (under 30 grand), never tries to impress anyone. no frunk, but it doesn’t pretend to need one. smells like 2013 tech and innocence. for all the jokes it gets, i like it, feels like that friend who’s awkward at parties but will always help you move a couch. honest car. humble. kind of refreshing after all this nonsense.
