China’s $52K EV Shatters World Range Record at 644 Miles
BYD’s premium sub-brand Denza has unveiled the updated Z9 GT electric shooting brake, claiming a CLTC-rated range of 1,036 km or 644 miles on a single charge. In its official reveal, Denza declared the car delivers “the world’s longest pure electric driving range vehicle.” Notably, Denza’s standard Z9 sedan filed an even longer CLTC range of 1,068 km in the same regulatory batch. BYD’s Denza Z5 sedan files a separate 1,680 km CLTC figure in a different vehicle class. The announcement arrived ahead of BYD’s March 5 technology launch event in China, where the company is set to formally introduce a suite of breakthrough technologies built around the new model.
A 64% Leap Over the Previous Model

The 1,036 km figure represents a 64% improvement over the current Z9 GT’s 630 km CLTC range, an increase of 406 km in a single generation. The record is achieved with the larger of two available battery options: a 122.5 kWh pack. The smaller 102.3 kWh option still delivers 820 km (509 miles). An official WLTP-certified range figure will not be available until Denza submits the vehicle for European type approval, expected later in 2026.
The Blade Battery 2.0 Behind the Numbers

Powering the Z9 GT’s record range is BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, expected to be formally launched at the March 5 event. The new chemistry achieves an energy density of 190 to 210 Wh/kg, a significant improvement over the first generation’s 140 to 150 Wh/kg. The long-blade format used in the top Z9 GT configuration supports 8C discharge and 3C charging capability. This allows BYD to pack substantially more energy into the same physical footprint without compromising the structural cell-to-pack safety design that defines the Blade platform.
Breaking the “Impossible Triangle”

A senior BYD executive described the technological achievement as one that “breaks the ‘impossible triangle’ for premium pure-electric flagship models by balancing high horsepower, long range, and fast charging speeds.” The Z9 GT embodies that balance: the single-motor rear-drive variant produces 370 kW (496 hp), while the tri-motor all-wheel-drive configuration delivers 850 kW or 1,140 hp. Both outputs represent a performance leap over the current model.
PHEV Option Doubles the EV Range

Buyers who want additional flexibility can choose the plug-in hybrid Z9 GT, which uses a 63.82 kWh battery delivering over 400 km (248 miles) of all-electric range. That is nearly double the outgoing PHEV model’s 201 km EV range, a figure that has historically been considered a key weakness for plug-in hybrids competing against pure EVs. The PHEV variant provides a practical option for buyers in markets where public charging infrastructure remains uneven, without sacrificing the Z9 GT’s premium positioning.
Megawatt Charging at 400 km in Five Minutes

When the Z9 GT needs charging, BYD’s new Megawatt Flash Charge 2.0 system handles the task rapidly. Expected to be officially launched at the March 5 event, the system delivers 1,500 kW per charging gun, with stations capable of up to 2,100 kW combined output under dual-gun configurations. Technical reports indicate this translates to approximately 400 km of range added in just five minutes, described by BYD as “1 second, 2 kilometres” charging speed. BYD also announced plans to build or partner in developing 15,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China by the end of 2026.
Range Figures Require Context

Despite the extraordinary headline numbers, some observers urge measured expectations around the CLTC rating. Electrek noted in its coverage that “although it’s under CLTC conditions, a range of over 1,000 km is still impressive, not to mention, way more than what the average driver needs.” CLTC ratings typically run higher than real-world results, as they are tested under controlled laboratory conditions. The “world’s longest” claim applies specifically to mass-production lineup EVs, and the Lucid Air Grand Touring holds a Guinness-certified range record under separate testing conditions.
Cabin Tech and God’s Eye 5.0

Inside, the Z9 GT reflects its luxury ambitions with a 17.3-inch central touchscreen flanked by dedicated cluster and passenger displays. The vehicle runs BYD’s God’s Eye 5.0 advanced driver assistance platform, incorporating Navigate on Autopilot for both city and highway driving, along with Automatic Emergency Steering. The shooting brake body style mirrors the proportions of a Porsche Panamera. The Z9 GT measures 5,195 mm in length with a 3,125 mm wheelbase, blending everyday practicality with a flagship aesthetic.
Pricing and the European Push

In China, the current Denza Z9 GT EV starts at 354,800 yuan, approximately $51,700. Pricing for the updated model will be confirmed closer to launch. BYD plans to roll the Denza brand into Europe and the UK during 2026, where the Z9 GT will compete directly against the Porsche Panamera, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Carwow reported the UK price is expected to sit around £50,000, a competitive entry point against established German luxury rivals.
A Direct Challenge to German Dominance

The Denza Z9 GT’s 1,036 km range claim is not just a specification milestone. It signals BYD’s intent to redefine what a luxury EV can offer globally. Arriving alongside the Blade Battery 2.0, the Megawatt Flash Charge 2.0 infrastructure, and God’s Eye 5.0 ADAS, it forms part of a comprehensive technology ecosystem set to be introduced simultaneously. For buyers in Europe long accustomed to German dominance in the premium segment, the updated Denza Z9 GT presents a technically formidable and competitively priced alternative.
