8 Used EVs To Help You Through The Impending U.S. Gas Crisis

Gas prices are on the rise again, with oil topping $100 a barrel and America’s refinery network getting smaller. In late 2025, Phillips 66 closed its 139,000-barrel-per-day Wilmington refinery, and Valero plans to idle its Benicia plant by April 2026.

Fewer refineries and tighter supplies make the used EV market more appealing than ever. Steep depreciation and a wave of off-lease cars have made late-model electric vehicles surprisingly affordable. Here are eight that stand out.

1. Genesis GV70 Electrified

The Genesis GV70 Electrified is the biggest steal here. When new, it sold for about $67,000, but now used examples can be found for less than $25,000. Some are even close to $24,000 with around 55,000 miles.

Under the hood, it packs a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery and dual motors, delivering 429 horsepower (or 483 with a 10-second boost). This results in a 0-60 time under four seconds and about 236 miles of range per charge.

2. Volkswagen ID.4

The Volkswagen ID.4 is one of the easiest used EVs to find right now. Even higher-mileage models can go for as little as $11,000, so options exist for almost every budget.

With up to 275 miles of range and 150-kilowatt DC fast charging, it handles both daily commutes and longer trips without much range anxiety. The roomy crossover interior is practical, and with so many available, finding one nearby is simple.

3. Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf remains the entry point for the used EV market. A 40-kilowatt-hour model can be found for under $10,000, making it a budget-friendly electric car.

The base version gets about 149 miles of range when new, while the larger 62-kilowatt-hour Plus model goes further. Earlier Leafs have air-cooled batteries, which can wear out faster in hot areas. For short-distance commuting in mild weather, the Leaf offers strong value.

4. Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 stands out on the used market. Low-mileage examples are available under $25,000, and depending on the trim and powertrain, range falls between 220 and 318 miles. Hyundai’s E-GMP platform gives the Ioniq 5 a spacious cabin with one of the roomiest back seats in its class.

Reviewers praise the quiet, comfortable ride and responsive handling on winding roads. This model works well for families or anyone needing extra space.

5. Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 is closely related to the Ioniq 5, sharing the same E-GMP platform but trading some cabin space for sportier looks and a shorter wheelbase. Rear-wheel-drive versions with the large battery offer an EPA-estimated 310 to 319 miles of range.

The high-performance GT model can now be found for under $25,000 used. The GT delivers more power and better grip, though range drops to 206 to 231 miles depending on the year.

6. BMW i4

The BMW i4 proves that a used luxury EV can be attainable. Rear-drive eDrive35 and eDrive40 versions are appearing under $25,000, though some patience is required to find one. EPA estimates put the range between 235 and 318 miles, depending on year and wheels.

The Gran Coupe body style brings a sleek fastback look, and the single-motor models offer notable efficiency.

7. Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona Electric is a compact crossover that exceeds expectations. Real-world range averages about 230 to 250 miles, which matches much larger SUVs. Hyundai’s strong warranties add confidence on the used market, and heavy depreciation brings well-equipped examples under $25,000.

Its small size makes it easy to park and navigate in urban areas, and the smooth ride adds comfort. This model fits daily commuters well.

8. Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV is closely related to the Kona Electric, offering a refined drive in a slightly different package. Real-world range sits between 230 and 250 miles, and the compact crossover shape provides enough cargo space for daily errands without the bulk of a large SUV.

Like the Kona, heavy depreciation has made well-equipped Niro EVs affordable. Kia’s excellent warranty coverage continues for second owners, providing extra peace of mind.

Before You Buy

Before you buy, verify the vehicle’s history and battery health; degradation varies widely by model and usage. Check that any dealer-sold EV comes with remaining factory warranty coverage, as powertrain repairs can be expensive out of pocket.

With refinery capacity shrinking and gas prices volatile, locking in lower transportation costs with a used EV makes financial sense. The supply of off-lease models remains strong through 2026, giving buyers leverage to negotiate. Act while inventory is plentiful and depreciation is working in your favor.
