The future of affordable performance cars looks stronger than it has in years

For a while it felt like affordable performance was slowly going away, but now it kind of looks stronger than it has in years again, I think. Cars that probably should have disappeared are still hanging around, and a few new ones slipped in without much noise. Does not really feel like some big golden age, more like the whole thing quietly came back while everyone was busy with bigger stuff and crossovers. You notice it more when you see what you can still buy than when you scroll the news, which is sort of funny and a bit ordinary at the same time. Feels promising, but also like it could change again pretty fast, in a way you do not totally trust.

Toyota GR86

Owning a GR86 feels like keeping a small, slightly old-school idea alive. Sits low in the driveway, looks almost too simple next to all the tall crossovers, maybe even a little out of place now. When you drive it, asks you to pay attention in a way most cars do not bother with anymore, and that can be tiring or kind of nice depending on your day. Some days it feels perfect, other days you wonder if it is too focused on fun you do not always have time for. Still kind of sticks in your head even when you tell yourself you need something more sensible, and that thought just hangs there in the background.

That question sort of becomes part of owning it, whether you mean to or not.

You might go back and forth on whether this is “the one” or just a phase you are in for a while and will look back on later. That in-between feeling settles in and makes it feel both special and oddly normal at the same time, which is just kind of how it ends up being.
